Intent
At Martello Primary School, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to enjoy, participate in and succeed in physical activity. We want our pupils to develop a lifelong love of sport and physical activity, whilst understanding the important role it plays in their physical health, mental wellbeing, confidence and resilience.
Our PE curriculum aims to develop skilful, confident and physically literate pupils who can apply their skills across a wide range of sports and activities. Alongside physical development, we use PE to develop teamwork, communication, leadership, perseverance, respect and the ability to celebrate both personal and team success.
Inclusion is at the heart of our PE provision. We believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to participate, regardless of their ability or prior experience. Lessons and activities are adapted where necessary so that all pupils can experience challenge, enjoyment and success.
We also want our pupils to experience the excitement of representing their school and competing with others. Through a wide range of competitions, festivals and sporting events, we encourage pupils to develop confidence, resilience and good sportsmanship.
As a school situated close to the sea, we believe that being confident and safe in the water is an essential life skill. We are committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to develop their swimming ability and water confidence before leaving Martello.
Implementation
PE is taught throughout the school through a broad and balanced programme of sports and physical activities. Pupils progressively develop their fundamental movement skills, fitness, coordination, balance, agility and control, before applying these skills in a range of individual and team sports.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to experience:
Games and team sports
Athletics
Dance
Gymnastics
Outdoor and adventurous activities
Swimming and water safety
A range of extra-curricular sporting activities
Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit and develop previously taught skills, becoming increasingly confident and independent as they move through the school.
We place a strong emphasis on participation and inclusion. PE activities are adapted to meet individual needs, ensuring that pupils with different abilities and needs can take part meaningfully alongside their peers.
Our PE provision extends beyond curriculum lessons. Pupils have opportunities to participate in extra-curricular clubs, inter-school competitions, festivals and sporting events. We provide opportunities for children to represent Martello and develop leadership skills through sport.
We are proud to hold the Platinum School Games Mark, recognising our commitment to providing a wide range of sporting opportunities, competition, inclusion and participation.
Swimming is a particularly important part of our PE curriculum. Every pupil in Key Stage 2 attends a term of weekly swimming lessons during their time at Martello. Alongside developing swimming strokes and technique, pupils develop confidence in the water and learn essential water-safety and self-rescue skills.
Impact
Our PE curriculum enables pupils to develop the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to lead healthy and active lives.
Pupils make progress in their physical development, becoming increasingly competent and confident across a range of sports and physical activities. They learn to apply skills and tactics, work effectively as part of a team, compete fairly and evaluate their own performance.
Through PE and competitive sport, pupils develop important personal qualities including resilience, perseverance, confidence, teamwork, leadership and respect. They learn that success can mean improving their own performance, supporting others or achieving as part of a team.
We monitor the impact of PE through teacher assessment, observation and pupil participation. We also consider participation in extra-curricular activities, competitions and sporting events, ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all pupils.
Our Platinum School Games Mark reflects our ongoing commitment to providing inclusive sporting opportunities and enabling pupils to participate in competition and physical activity.
Most importantly, we want every child to leave Martello with positive experiences of physical activity, confidence in their own abilities and the knowledge that being active is an important part of a healthy and happy life.
