We recognise that a child’s first year at school is an incredibly important time. School choice has to feel right, so the best way to decide whether Martello Primary is the right place for your child is to visit us for a tour.
However to gain a brief overview of just some information about Early Years at Martello, please read the below.
At Martello we take the time to get to know our new pupils and their families, making sure that parents and carers are involved in their child’s learning journey every step of the way. We use Tapestry (an online programme) to record, celebrate and share children’s progress with their families.
We know that getting the first stages if school life right is vital for pupils to connect to their education- we want our pupils to love coming to school. For this reason, we take part in meet and greet sessions with families before pupils start to give parents and carers the chance to tell us about their child. We also provide settling-in ‘stay and play’ sessions, Teddy Bears’ picnics and provide a transition booklet with all the information pupils and their families need.
Our ethos for Early Years is centered around quality child-initiated play. We know the value of learning through play. Our Reception pupils have their own special outside area to use.
Our beautiful purpose-built classroom ensures that your child’s learning flows naturally from inside to outside. The classroom is set up as an inviting learning space rich with resources and zones to promote pupil exploration.
Our team is confident in facilitating excellent learning opportunities to enhance pupils’ early development. We know that teaching a love of reading is important, so we read widely and regularly to our pupils throughout each day.
We teach phonics through the well-known Read Write Inc programme. We help our pupils develop as confident talkers and pride ourselves on developing their speaking and listening skills.
All pupils in Reception are provided with healthy free school meals made onsite.
Appeals
If your child is due to start Primary school in September 2026, you can appeal if you are refused a place at one of your preferred schools on National Offer Day (Thursday, 16th April 2026). You needed to submit your appeal before Monday, 18th May 2026 for it to be considered by Monday, 20th July 2026. Any appeals received after this time will be heard within 40 school days from the deadline, or where reasonably possible in line with updated guidance from the Department for Education. You will receive written notification of the date and arrangements of the hearing at least 10 school days before the hearing, including whether it will be held in person, remotely or as a hybrid of both.
For late applications, appeals should be heard within 40 school days from the deadline for lodging appeals where possible, or within 30 school days of the appeal being lodged where reasonably possible in line with updated guidance from the Department for Education
Breakfast Club
We start the school day with offering all our pupils a breakfast from 8am, with food being served until 8:30am. Breakfast choices include cereals and toast as well as milk, water or fruit juice. Parents can book a place at Breakfast Club using the My Child at School App. There is a charge of £2 per child, per day to attend. If you are in receipt of free school meals, your place will be free of charge.
