Ethos, Values & Qualities
Character of the School:
Part of the unique character of our school comes from its coastal location. We are right by the famous White Cliffs and France is visible across the English Channel on most days from our library. On the East Cliff a short walk away are the remains of a Roman palace. These things inspire interest in the wider world and so our classes are named after the seven continents, starting in Reception with our own continent: Europe.
Everything we do in school is guided by the Principles and Purpose, Practice and Pedagogy of our Sponsoring Trust, Turner Schools:

Our job is to equip our pupils with the knowledge that makes them skilled. We structure and sequence the knowledge we teach through subjects.

Trust Practice and Pedagogy:
The HEART model helps us ensure that our practice embodies our principles. It also reminds us that everything we do should come from a place of love, putting children first.

For this reason, we say that we are ‘schools with HEART’
All members of Martello staff take a positive and proactive approach to the care of children, and in return we expect the highest standards in behaviour, participation and attendance. Teachers and staff at Martello address children by their first names and are familiar not only with the children in their class, but the whole school.
We ensure that parents know how crucial these factors are to academic success, and work in partnership with other agencies to give parents the support they need.
Children have the best chance for success in education and in life by attending school regularly and on time so as not to miss any learning. We expect full attendance by all pupils therefore, and will undertake intervention should a child’s attendance fall below 97%.
At Martello we expect the highest standards of behaviour. Our behaviour code is applied in every lesson and day-to-day through our school rules. You will see the rules in written form in all classrooms because the children are taught the rationale behind them. Far more important than seeing our rules in writing, however, is experiencing how they embody the ethos of Martello Primary, shaping how we learn, how we interact with each other, and how we conduct ourselves.
We use non-verbal cues to direct conduct in a positive manner than does not interfere with learning. Your children should be able to show you our ‘stop sign’, ‘your turn-my turn’ and the ‘talk to your partner’ signs which derive from our Read Write Inc. literacy programme.
